What is important to realize is that a fundamental archetypal pattern underlies all story-telling, novels and screen plays.
Authors do not always use all of these key elements but readers and viewers unconsciously look for them.
Study this Star Novel Writing Diagram and see for yourself the basic elements and whether, or not, you fulfill them in planning the structure of how you are going to write your novel.
If you want to test your knowledge of the Star Diagram then apply it to a favorite movie or novel that you are especially moved by.
For each concept in the diagram write a paragraph using your favorite example as the illustration for this concept. You will then be in a learning process to learn the Star Schema for Writing A Novel.

You can use the diagram as a basis of making a mind map for planning out your novel. I use FreeMind for diagramming, but there are a number of programs out there. I use OmniOutliner sometimes. Currently I am trying out a note system for keeping good track of your info bits and organizing them into collections. This is called EverNote.
What is developing quickly on the Web in 2008 is organizing software for writing, thinking and all kinds of projects. Writing a novel is a big, big, organizing information and craft tools project. Organizing software is highly recommended.
What these software programs lack however is the craft knowledge in a given subject field.
